I don't think it needs clarifying at this point, actually. I think that you have the right balance between revealing what's going on and giving the reader a chance to try to work things out. Clarifying Hook's motivations in this fic would be to its detriment, IMO, and is best left to future fics :) You've got me invested enough in the characters that I'm speculating, and that is a wonderful thing :D
