A good question! And I really appreciate how you make me have to think of these things!

I think it dates back to before the war, and that even then Swindle warred within about being a team player v being individual. This is accentuated by the gestalt, and I think the glitches are precipitated by Swindle 'not feeling a part of things.' Which triggers a well, no sweat, I'll go it alone then type response.

I've got a prequel to Substitute in veery draft stage where Swindle agonizes over how (as he sees it) the others are paying each other a heap of attention, and seem to have almost forgotten about him - despite his putting up a great effort on Cybertron.

Vortex compounds matters by saying something like: "What you lookin' at? Anyone would think you wanted me to frag you or something. Heheh - well you betta stand in the queue!" and then goes laughingly off with Brawl.

Something like that. It was most influential where the spare parts glitch was concerned LOL

Later, the glitch could also be to do with periods of stagnation - good suggestion!
